About Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic Medicine is on the leading edge of healthcare today.

If you are new to naturopathic medicine, you may be happily surprised that your first visit will include a comprehensive assessment from head to toe as well as a brief physical exam.
Because everything, including the organ systems of the body, works together.  We are more than singular body parts with symptoms, we are more than the numbers on a test result. Because everything about us is connected, naturopathic doctors take an overall approach to help discover causes and to treat effectively.

Naturopathic Doctors are primary care physicians in Oregon and many other states.
Training includes 4-year medical education and clinical skills.  Naturopathic doctors are required to pass rigorous state board exams and clinical evaluation in order to obtain licensure. The first two years are similar to conventional medical school, while the third and forth years focus on treatment methods and modalities including nutrition, botanical medicine, manipulation of the spine (known in the chiropractic world as “adjustment”), pharmaceutical medications (and the potential interactions) as well as minor surgery.  While not always the first line of treatment, medications may be necessary long or short term and naturopathic doctors in Oregon have the authority to prescribe. However, emphasis is placed on treating and replenishing through many means including targeted modalities. The number one principal of treatment?  First Do No Harm.

Because there are many ways to promote health and restore a body back to its natural state of wellness, treatment methods and specialties vary among practitioners. Dr. Sawhill’s specialties include musculoskeletal issues and pain, hormone balance and treatment for men and women, food and other allergies, as well as the chronic issues people bring to her, for example: high cholesterol, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, thyroid issues, allergies and many more.

Dr. Sawhill is gifted and skilled in treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and pain.  She is proficient in evaluation of  the ‘soft tissue’ and ligamentous injuries that typically occur with motor vehicle accidents and falls.  And it is not a ‘one size fits all’, for example, auto accident injuries are intricately linked to the physics of how the injury occurs, the anatomy of the human body, the particulars of what the person was doing upon impact as well as medical history.  This is why some people can have severe pain and injury and others have no pain, even if they were in the same car! Many aspects of injury play a role in treatment, diagnosis and prognosis.

Dr. Sawhill is a prolotherapist, a technique that strengthens ligaments. Proliferative therapeutic injections along with the gentleActivator Technique, manual therapies, cold laser and individual instruction in functional rehabilitation exercises help bring bodies back into balance without force or pain (except the injections–they hurt but are worth it!)

Dr. Sawhill’s expertise in BioIdentical Hormones includes analysis of your general symptoms and goals as well as looking into the individual metabolic pathways to determine any imbalance in how your body processes the individual hormones.  This assures safety, efficacy and precision of treatment for your unique biology.

Likewise, with chronic and familial issues, Dr. Sawhill approaches the individual symptoms, complaints, the test and imaging results in conjunction with the whole of who you are.  Following her expert analysis, the treatment recommendations often address many issues, encompassing the entire person.  She makes treatment plans as simplified as possible, coaching along the way, to help make it easy for you to participate in your complete naturopathic makeover!  Her practice is open to men, women and children of all ages.
