The Politics of Lectins, February 2021
Discovered in 1888, the modern era is revealing what many people have already discovered for themselves through dietary trial and error regarding lectins. Lectins are carbohydrate-binding proteins found in most plant food with a relatively higher amount contained in the seeds of legumes, fruiting bodies of mushrooms, certain grains, nightshades and animals. They have been identified as exacerbating if not causing symptoms of digestion issues like bloating and gas, inflammation. While more research is needed, in some populations lectins are correlated with several disease processes.
In 1989 Naturopathic doctor, Peter D’Adamo along with Catherine Whitney were the first to introduce lectins as contributors to the ill health of certain populations.1 In the late 90’s, their literature and research focused on the immunoagglutination of different lectins when exposed to the variant ABO blood types. The NY Times bestseller, Eat Right For Your Type Blood Type Diet was published in 1996. Since, many more books have been written and Dr. D’Adamo has developed several supplements specific to each blood type in order to improve the health of our population.
